How to sleep better
As World Sleep Day approaches, Dyson engineer Michael Love shares practical tips on how to optimize your sleep environment to help get a restful night.
Minimize Pollution
Indoor air pollution may decrease the quality of your sleep due to the presence of pollutants and potential allergy triggers in the air. Dyson’s first Global Connected Air Quality Data project also found that homes in the U.S. experience higher levels of PM2.5 pollution between 6 p.m. and midnight. Dyson’s purifier range effectively purifies the entire room, capturing ultrafine pollutants, removing gases, and destroying formaldehyde1. Various sources of particle pollution, including mattresses, bedding fibers, and even cuddly toys, contribute to poor indoor air quality in bedrooms. Movement or rearrangement of these items can release settled dust, increasing pollutant levels.
The Right Light
Studies suggest that unintentional exposure to artificial light late at night (from phone or computer screens, for example) tends to disrupt sleep continuity, which can have a knock-on effect on performance throughout the day2. To minimize disruption to your internal clock, consider using lights that can support winding down in the evening and facilitate a gradual wake-up in the morning.
In ambient mode, the stem of the Dyson Solarcycle Morph produces its warmest color temperature and lowest blue light output for evening relaxation, emitting light at 1,800 Kelvin to emulate candlelight. Additionally, it features a gradual wake-up mode, therefore providing the ideal lighting conditions for relaxation in the evening and gentle awakening in the morning.
Mattress Vacuuming
While it may look clean, your mattress may actually be a hot bed of microscopic life, which could be impacting your wellbeing while you sleep. Pollen and other allergens make up the complex matrix that is household dust, which also exists in your mattress. Pollen and pet dander may be a trigger for physical symptoms that could be a distraction from a good night’s sleep.
In addition, some materials commonly found in mattresses and bedding products contain plasticizers and flame-retardants, known as VOCs, which can be released into the air at room temperature. Spending extended periods near these pollutant sources may increase exposure to VOCs.
During sleep, our bodies elevate the surface temperature of mattresses, while sweating and the buffering capacity of bedding materials can increase humidity. This combination facilitates the release of VOCs into the air.
Using a vacuum with a high-power or boost mode will deliver the suction you need to remove as many skin flakes and allergens as possible. Pairing this with a purifier can aid the management of allergens and VOCs to maintain a cleaner and more inviting sleeping environment.
Right Temperature
Adjusting your body temperature to achieve comfortable sleep often means warmer air in cooler months and cooler air during summer. Dyson’s purifier range helps you control your environment and create optimal bedtime conditions. Comfortable temperatures and humidity levels can be controlled either through the MyDyson app or a remote control. A powerful steam of purified airflow cools you down when needed.
Quiet Purifier
Excessive noise can disrupt sleep patterns, potentially leading to poor rest and decreased productivity during the day. Dyson’s Purifier range is equipped with a night mode, which dims the display and ensures quiet operation, making it ideal for use while sleeping. Our most powerful purifier, the Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet, records just 56dBA, supporting a peaceful sleeping environment while effectively capturing pollutants in the air.
