Dyson Solarcycle Morph: Behind the Light
At Dyson, dissatisfaction sparks innovation. Dyson engineers are fueled by frustration with how conventional lighting works and driven by an obsession to make things work better. This relentless pursuit of perfection underpins everything we do, especially in our lighting technology.
For creatives, achieving perfection often demands a strong focus on detail, leading to prolonged periods of intense concentration. However, this level of focus can strain the eyes, especially when working under inadequate lighting conditions. The flicker of traditional lighting sources only exacerbates this strain, further affecting productivity and comfort. Moreover, the need for bright, clear light often persists into nighttime hours, as creatives often find themselves staying up late to meet deadlines or fulfill their bursts of artistic visions at unexpected hours. Additionally, proper color reproduction is essential for artists, architects, interior designers, and fashion designers alike, as accurate representation is vital to their work.
Recognizing these challenges, Dyson has crafted a lighting solution. Inspired by the design of the cooling mechanisms of satellites, Jake Dyson’s breakthrough heat pipe technology, an unchanged presence in Dyson Lighting since 2015, revolutionized the efficiency and lifespan of the humble desk and floor light. At its core lay a vacuum-sealed copper tube, designed to draw heat away from the LEDs. A drop of water evaporates, dissipating heat along the pipe before condensing and returning to the LEDs, creating an energy-free cooling cycle that maintains light quality for decades.
The Dyson Solarcycle Morph’s ambient stem is made of a dual-layer Aluminium-Polycarbonate composite, the same material used in riot shields, to provide strength. The surface inside the aluminium core is highly reflective to aid a gradual and visually pleasing travel of light down the length of the stem.
The outer aluminium tube is precision engineered to a depth of just 0.7mm. The tube is rotationally punched to achieve the ideal dimensions and width ratio of the apertures, lending a beautiful gradient to the lit effect. This solution began its life in a spare parts bin. In passing, an engineer spotted a discarded filter from the Dyson V11™ cord-free vacuum – and its gauze-like shroud provided timely inspiration. It quickly became clear that aluminium etched with tiny holes could create a distinct and intriguing lit effect. After countless iterations, the desk variant is punctured by 4,950 apertures, with 16,740 on the floor variant, a testament to our attention to design details.
Yet, only achieving an excellent design is not enough to satisfy Dyson engineers, our focus extends to the intelligence of the light itself. The daylight tracking algorithm embedded in the Dyson Solarcycle is validated by over 1m atmospheric data points. It adjusts color temperature and brightness according to local daylight, providing optimal illumination throughout the day. The Dyson Solarcycle provides properties of natural light whil giving you the flexibility to adjust light to meet the demands of your changing day. Whether it’s waking up to an artificial sunrise in your bedroom, working with powerful, high-quality task light that’s auto corrected for your age, enhancing your home and art with dramatic feature lighting, or relaxing in the evening with soothing ambient light.
In addition, the Intelligent Optical Head ensures a uniform pool of powerful light with over 1,000 Lux brightness, combined with glare protection and low optical flicker. And with the MyDyson app, personalized lighting becomes a reality, adapting to age, task, daily routine, and local daylight, supporting optimal illumination every step of the way.
Engineered for Creativity
-
Visual accuracy
For creative specialists such as designers, accuracy and precision is key. Lighting is important when designers are creating meticulous sketches where accurate color rendition is essential.
The Precision mode in the light achieves a color rendering index of 90 or higher (out of 100). Meaning, it displays colors very close to daylight. In this mode, fine drawing, painting, or crafts appear truer-to-life.
The Precision mode helps improve visual performance by emitting a pool of high-intensity light with a cooler (4,600 Kelvin) color temperature. Designers can rely on this technology to showcase and work on their creations accurately, without the risk of color distortion.
-
Customized lighting
Creatives such as interior designers thrive on creating immersive environments tailored to specific moods and activities. With the Dyson Solarcycle they can personalize lighting configurations at their fingertips with the MyDyson™ App.
From adjusting color temperature to accommodating changes in natural light, designers can create atmospheres that enhance the functionality and aesthetics of their space.
-
Enhanced Light Quality
A reliable light is crucial for designers, to guarantee consistent quality illumination every day. The Dyson Solarcycle Morph’s advanced heat pipe technology ensures consistent and high-quality light over its lifespan. Designers can rely on this technology to work on their art tirelessly, allowing them to trust in the lighting system’s capabilities when illuminating their creations.
Precisely designed for creatives, the Dyson Solarcycle Morph should feel like a well-designed piece of engineering, not just an appliance. Every component is designed to fit perfectly, and every use should bring a sense of satisfaction, blending functional fluency with emotional resonance and sensorial satisfaction.
