How Dyson’s separation technology makes floor cleaning more hygienic
Published: August 12, 2025
Cleaning hard floors used to mean spreading dirty water around with a mop. But Dyson engineers saw a better way. The Dyson WashG1™ wet floor cleaner is engineered to remove wet and dry dirt in one pass – while keeping clean and dirty water completely separate. It’s a hygienic solution that transforms how we clean our homes.
Why separation matters
Traditional wet cleaning methods often rely on a single water tank, or a mop dipped repeatedly into the same water. This can lead to cross-contamination, unpleasant odors, and ineffective cleaning. The Dyson WashG1™ solves this problem by simultaneously:
- Squeezing dirty water from the roller and extracting it into a waste tank
- Hydrating the roller continuously with clean water from a separate clean water tank.
Engineered for hygienic disposal
The pioneering separation technology in Dyson WashG1™ also divides dirty water and solid debris into two distinct containers. Here’s how it works:
- Dirty water extraction: Durable extraction plates remove moisture from the rollers, directing it into a dedicated dirty water tank with a 0.21 gallon capacity.
- Solid debris removal: Secondary nylon-bristled brush bars flick dirt and hair into a removable debris tray, designed with a 500-micron mesh to keep solids out of the water tank.
- No-touch disposal: Both the dirty water tank and debris tray are easy to remove and empty – so you never have to touch the mess.
This separation system provides hassle-free maintenance, making it easy to dispose of wet and dry waste hygienically.
Self-cleaning for next time
After use, the Dyson WashG1™ activates a full-system self-clean cycle. In just 140 seconds, clean water flushes through the rollers and internal components, preparing the machine for its next clean. There are no filters to trap bacteria or emit odors – just hygienic maintenance, built in.
Designed for easy upkeep
Dyson’s engineers eliminated sharp internal surfaces and hard-to-reach crevices, making the Dyson WashG1™ easier to clean manually. Both water tanks feature wide openings for effortless rinsing and drying.
A better way to clean
By separating wet and dry waste, the Dyson WashG1™ delivers a hygienic clean that’s fast, effective and easy to maintain. It’s ideal for homes with pets, children, or anyone who values a spotless floor – without the mess.
