Look closely

If you look closely at the metal shroud on a Dyson Big Ball machine, you'll see it's perforated with tiny holes – over 30,000 of them, in fact. Dirty air gets sucked through the mesh, filtering out all but the finest particles of dust. To be just right, each hole has to be individually etched with acid, and measure less than 250 microns wide... That's less than half the size of a single grain of salt.

Conventional canister vacuums can topple over easily – interrupting your cleaning.

Dyson engineers created a curved body with a low center of gravity. So when the vacuum is knocked down, gravitational force automatically rolls it back upright.

The tipping point

Every internal component of a Dyson Big Ball vacuum has been designed to help the vacuum self-right. From the motor to the cord rewind – everything's been designed to fit neatly inside the ball chassis, while keeping the weight as low as possible. The centre of gravity is controlled to within 0.11 inches – any higher or lower and the vacuum wouldn't get back up.
