At the Dyson Research and Development center, 450 engineers and scientists look for new ways to solve everyday problems. A dedicated microbiology lab plays a vital role.

Here, Dyson microbiologists cultivate and study household allergens. They have a dust mite farm, where they breed house dust mites (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus), feeding them a mixture of yeast and dog biscuit and keeping them in their favorite conditions: 77°F and 75%+ relative humidity. They use the allergenic dust mite feces for cyclone and performance testing.

The experiments they carry out help Dyson develop vacuum cleaners that meet asthma & allergy friendly™ certification standards according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.

What the certification means

Dyson vacuums certified asthma & allergy friendly™ are independently tested to the ASP:03:01 Vacuum Cleaner Certification Standard for their ability to reduce allergenic and irritant materials. Tests are carried out on machines to ensure allergy removal remains high throughout use.

What the certification covers

Tests cover the removal of allergen-containing test dust from carpets, levels of airborne allergens during vacuuming, filtration integrity, cleaning performance when the bin is almost full, and the risk of allergen exposure during bin emptying. Dyson machines meet or exceed the strict criteria for all these tests.
