Tools and cleaning advice for people with asthma and allergies

Dyson tools are designed by the same engineers as Dyson vacuum cleaners. They’re made from the same tough, durable materials – glass-filled polypropylene, ABS polycarbonate. They're ideal for removing dust and allergens from upholstery and awkward places around the home.

Upholstery and furniture

Picture frames and mantelpieces

Both have horizontal surfaces where dust gathers. Don’t use a feather duster, as this just circulates dust into the air. Attach a Dyson Soft dusting brush to remove dust effectively.

Bedding

If you have delicate bedding that can’t be washed at high temperature, wrap it up and put it in the freezer for a few hours to kill dust mites. You can then wash normally to remove the dead mites.

Rugs and carpets

Vacuum often with a machine that is certified asthma & allergy friendly™. Pollen can persist for several months in carpets and rugs, so keep vacuuming regularly even when hay fever season is over.

Cushion covers

Dust mites don’t just live in mattresses and carpets – sofas and cushions are ideal environments too. Use a mattress tool attachment and wash the covers every few weeks at above 140°F.

Hard-to-reach places

Lampshades

Fabric lampshades tend to retain dust and can be hard to get to without detaching. Use a Dyson Multi-angle brush to clean them.

Beneath furniture

Clumps of dust and fibers known as ‘dust bunnies’ gather here. Use a floor tool with a low profile to remove them.

Keyboard fluff

Computer keyboards can harbor as much bacteria as toilet seats – and they’re tricky to clean. Use a Soft dusting brush to remove the dust, then to disinfect, spray a light mixture of eucalyptus oil and water onto the keyboard and wipe gently (while the computer is unplugged).

Cupboard tops

The tops of cabinets, bookcases and wardrobes can be heard to reach, so dust can gather there and remain undisturbed. Remove it with a Dyson Multi-angle brush.

Other things to consider

Pets

When pets lick their fur they leave behind allergen-rich saliva – it ends up on upholstery and carpets when they shed. Vacuum regularly and use a cleaner with a motorized brush bar to remove more pet hair from deep-pile carpets.

Humidity

When humidity rises above 50%, the risk of mold allergies increases significantly. Keeping your home below 45% humidity makes it harder for fungi and mold to flourish.

Ventilation

Opening bathroom and kitchen windows can help lower humidity and reduce mold. Air other rooms regularly, but try to keep windows closed during the hay fever season.

Soft toys

Once a month, bag up soft toys and freeze for 48 hours. It kills dust mites and prevents them breeding. Thaw naturally.

Dyson mini turbine head

Cleans pet hair and fibers from stairs and upholstery. Rotating brush bar to pick up fur/fiber stuck to the carpet

Gardens

Grass

Pollen from grasses causes a reaction in 90% of people with hay fever. Keeping grass cut short will help prevent it flowering and producing pollen.

Flowers

Some flowering plants, including roses, self-pollinate. Because their pollen doesn’t have to travel so far, it doesn’t usually cause allergies.

Ferns

Ferns produce spores rather than pollen. They fling them into the air at up 14 feet per second using a slingshot mechanism. The spores can be highly allergenic.

Washing

If someone in your home suffers from hay fever, try not to dry washing in the garden when the pollen count is high – especially in the morning and early evening.
