House dust causes allergies in the home background image.

House dust is a major cause of allergies in the home.

Pollen, fungus, bacteria, chemicals, dust mite feces. Every one of these allergens is found in the dust in our homes. Some measure only 0.5 microns in size – 20 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair.

Skin and hair particles that shed from pets
Dust Mites
Feed on dead skin cells burrow deep into furnishings and carpets
Pollen
Highest cause of allergens. Becomes airborne and lands on multiple surfaces
Dust mites

Dust mites: From the family of arthropods that includes ticks, trombiculid mites and spiders.

Just one square meter of carpet can contain up to 1,000 of these microscopic creatures. But it’s not the mites that trigger allergies. It’s their feces. Each mite produces an average of 20 droppings a day, which can quickly become airborne as we move around our homes. Once they’re in the air, it’s easy to inhale them.

Mould

Mold: A perennial problem.

Mold spores can last for a long time, so people with allergies can exhibit symptoms throughout the year. These symptoms can become worse in the autumn, during wet, and mild weather.

As mold grows, it produces and releases millions of spores. When we inhale them, they can cause the same symptoms that appear in other upper respiratory allergies, including sneezing, running noses and itchy, watery eyes.

Pollen

Pollen: Concentrated on the floor, not in the air.

Pollen enters our homes in the air, but settles on surfaces, and can be found on the floor and under furniture.

When we breathe it in, pollen can trigger allergic rhinitis - a condition that affects up to 30% of the worldwide population.

When we inhale these microscopic particles, they can cause allergic reactions.

An allergy is a disorder of the immune system that causes hypersensitivity to certain substances, known as allergens. On contact with an allergen, the immune system thinks it’s under attack. It releases powerful chemicals that inflame affected areas, leading to coughing, itching and sneezing, among other symptoms.

For a vacuum cleaner to be effective at removing allergens, it needs more than just HEPA filtration. Just as important are powerful suction, high dust removal at the cleaner head, the ability to capture particles down to 0.3 microns and hygienic bin emptying.

Dyson: dust and
allergy experts.

13 years ago Dyson built an in-house microbiology laboratory. Inside, Dyson scientists analyze household allergens and have dust mite farms where they breed house dust mite cultures.

This enables Dyson microbiologists to study and fully understand dust mite behavior and the allergens they produce.

Through their research, Dyson microbiologists have discovered the most effective way to remove allergens - powerful suction.
