Dyson Motors

Energy use in appliances is determined by the motor which turns electrical energy into mechanical energy. Dyson engineers and scientists have spent the last ten years developing more efficient motor technology.

We launched the first Dyson digital motor in 2004 and it saw its first application in our compact DC12 vacuum cleaner designed for Japan. Next it was used to power Dyson Airblade™, our hand dryer. Rather than relying on energy-hungry heating elements, Dyson Airblade™ hand dryers use blades of air travelling at 400 miles per hour to wipe air from your hands.

We have recently launched a new digital motor to power our new handheld vacuums including DC31. The motor is 84 per cent energy efficient - twice as efficient as its carbon brushed predecessor and half of its size.

The latest Dyson digital motor is half the size of its predecessor. And twice as efficient as the carbon brushed motors used in earlier Dyson handhelds.

Smaller Motors

Many manufacturers rely on big motors to drive their machines. But a high motor wattage doesn't automatically mean good performance. In fact, it can mean wasted energy.

Our engineers don't specify unnecessarily large motors (they've never gone beyond 1400 watts in our vacuums). They focus on developing new technologies which make your machines work better - for example Root Cyclone™ technology. With Dyson DC24 we have proven that it is possible to engineer a smaller, high performing machine using only a 650 watt motor. So far, we're the only manufacturer to do so.

Lobbying for Environmental Legislation

As the European Union investigates energy usage legislation for vacuum cleaners, we're actively lobbying for a cap on the size of vacuum motors. Outlawing unnecessarily large motors will bring substantial energy savings and environmental benefits.

Materials Efficiency

Dyson engineers aim to do more with less - creating machines which perform better than their predecessors using fewer raw materials. Our function-led approach to design supports this aim: each component contributes to the overall performance of the machine. New technology, such as the Dyson digital motor, which is a third of the size of a conventional brushed motor - helps us reduce the size of our machines. Dyson DC30 - one of our handheld vacuums weighs just 1.2 kg - an improvement on its predecessor, the Dyson DC16, which weighed 1.55 kg.

The DC30 is smaller but more powerful than its predecessor.

The Dyson DC26 - a cleaner designed especially for Japanese homes - is a third of the size of its predecessors. Engineers painstakingly redesigned each component and shrunk the cyclone technology to fit into a space envelope the size of an A4 sheet of paper.

The DC26 is a third smaller than the DC22.

The Dyson Air Multiplier™ fan has been engineered to be material efficient. This means that it requires fewer raw materials and therefore less energy is needed in manufacture. With no blades, the fan weighs in at less than 1.8 kg (almost half the average weight of competitor fans) which means that it is more efficient to ship.

No Consumables

We're well-known for saying goodbye to the bag. Bagged vacuum cleaners clog and lose suction; what is less well known is their environmental impact. Many bags are now made from a mixture of plastic and paper and are not accepted in recycling streams. They end up in landfill, where they take hundreds of years to decompose.

As well as our commitment to no bags, we have developed lifetime washable filters for our vacuums, saving on raw materials.

Long Life

Dyson machines are engineered to last. All machines go through a rigorous performance, endurance and reliability testing programme - carried out 24 hours a day, seven days a week in our test facilities in the UK and Malaysia. This means that we can offer a five year guarantee to owners of Dyson upright and cylinder vacuums, as well as the Dyson Airblade™ hand dryer.

Returned vacuum cleaners are cleaned and serviced for sales to Dyson staff or to the public through our eBay sites. This ensures that useful products are not scrapped.
